Description

Oil Peroxide Value Testing for Cooking Oils

Oil Peroxide Value Test Strips provide a colour-based method for checking peroxide value (POV) in liquid edible oils. After dipping a strip into an oil sample, a colour reaction develops. Comparing this colour with the supplied reference chart provides an approximate indication of the peroxide level.

These strips are designed for peroxide screening as part of routine oil quality checks.

What Is Peroxide Value?

Peroxide value is an indicator of oil oxidation. Peroxides form as oils oxidise, and these test strips react with the peroxides present in the sample.

The resulting colour change allows users to estimate the peroxide level by matching the strip against the printed chart. This is a semi-quantitative test, meaning the result is an approximate value based on a visual colour comparison.

Which Oils Can Be Tested?

The manufacturer’s instructions list the following sample types:

  • Vegetable oils
  • Animal oils
  • Frying oils
  • Other edible oils

The oil sample must be liquid for testing. Follow the sample temperature requirements printed on the supplied packaging.

How to Use Oil Peroxide Value Test Strips

  1. Read the instructions: Check the supplied directions, expiry date and colour chart before testing.
  2. Prepare the sample: Place a sample of liquid oil in a clean container and ensure it meets the specified testing temperature.
  3. Dip the strip: Immerse the reaction area in the oil for the dipping time stated on the packaging.
  4. Allow the reaction to develop: Remove the strip and place it on a clean, flat surface.
  5. Check the reading time: Follow the reaction time specified in the supplied instructions or chart.
  6. Compare the colour: Match the reaction area with the reference chart within the stated reading window.

Use the instructions supplied with your pack for the exact dipping and reading times.

Understanding the Results

Yellow represents a negative or zero reading on the reference chart. Progressively darker green shades indicate increasing peroxide levels.

Compare the strip with the supplied chart to estimate the peroxide value. Always use the values and measurement units printed on your pack.

The result indicates peroxide value only and does not provide a complete assessment of oil quality.
